Omega fatty acids

Humans and other mammals cannot produce alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the source molecule for omega-3 fatty acids, on their own. This is why omega-3 (ALA) is considered an essential fatty acid. The parent ALA is then metabolised into two well-known fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both widely studied and playing various roles in the body.

Just like omega-3, the omega-6 family has an essential parent fatty acid: linoleic acid. Omega-6 fatty acids are abundant in commonly used vegetable oils such as soybean, sunflower, rapeseed and corn oil (but not olive oil).

The ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 is considered by science to be an important factor for general health, with balance between the two playing a role in the body.

Omega-9 fatty acid (oleic acid): research points to the presence of polyphenols as a possible source of the benefits attributed to this fatty acid. Polyphenols are themselves being researched, among other things for their antioxidant properties.
